Gig Based Learning (GBL) is a practical, performance-driven approach to music education. Instead of learning skills “just in case,” students prepare for real musical outcomes: a gig. Through performing, composing and listening, learning becomes purposeful, collaborative and authentic. Each gig provides a clear goal, with skills and knowledge developed in context and applied in real time.
How to get students playing in bands in 2026
Be guided by the philosophy
Gigs are simplified covers. They are a stripped down version of a famous song so that students can go from no experience to playing the song coherently within 20mins. Each Gig page consists of the Original Song, GBL Simplified Cover, Guided Practice Sessions, Backing Tracks, and other supportive resources.
Gig Support are resources that support the gig. We structure listening, composition, and musicological learning experiences use web tools. We provide all the materials that help your student become more comprehensive in their approach to learning the MVP. We house these materials in a Canvas course that each Member school has access to. As part of the Music EDnet membership you get access to a suite of web tools that are integrated in a way that we have taught ourselves. Have a poke around, it’s all there awaiting you.
Gig Context outlines the social or contextual affordances of the MVP. These gigs have opened up avenues of enquiry for us which may be the same for you. We share the affordances that we discovered from the gig. We just share avenues of enquiry. We find them provocative. We find them challenging, discomforting, and compelling. You can then choose what you’d like to bring in given your context.
