The Project:
A new $98m multi-storey building expanding the school’s capacity to 1950 students. This included upgraded music and drama facilities over two floors while retaining the existing theatre in the original building.
Key objectives
- Provide two large joining drama spaces allowing separate classes and combined performances with sound and lighting.
- A large music performance space and adjacent classroom.
- Six Practice/Teaching studios
- A Recording Control Room
- Allow students to practise and rehearse silently in small groups or individually.
All music and drama spaces are to be available for recording with networked multi-channel audio and video links to the control room and the existing theatre.
Design summary:
Early engagement with the SA Department for Education enabled collaboration with school stakeholders, aligning our design with curricula and learning outcomes. This guided technology recommendations and inspired innovative ways to engage students.
Key features include:
- Upgrading existing mixers and silent rehearsal systems for networked digital audio.
- Drama classroom theatre lighting with networked control and split/dual operation modes.
- Networked multi-channel audio across performing arts spaces. As well as recording this allows a live band in music to perform with theatre productions with live video links.
A unique performing arts facility across multiple floors in two buildings utilising school ICT infrastructure with flexibility for the future and easy use and management.

Brighton Grammar

The Project:
With new building plans still on the horizon the music department was keen to upgrade the existing music lab facilities much sooner if possible. This was a priority for years 7-8 where all students now had laptops and the traditional keyboard lab was no longer practical.
Key objectives
- Upgrade existing keyboard lab facilities allowing for re-location to a new building in the future
- Provide flexibility for students to use laptops, connect to keyboards and use current and emerging software
- Include adequate desktop space for classroom activities with or without laptops
- Maintain the ability to use keyboards with lab communication capabilities
An important requirement was to ensure that any upgrade would allow future flexibility in the room layout without a costly re-fit.
Design summary:
Discussions with music staff provided a clear understanding of the key learning outcomes for years 7-8 and we were able to include the advantages of the traditional keyboard lab into a new, flexible multi-use design.
Key features include:
- Custom designed music lab furniture … Music EDnet Creation Stations accommodating keyboards (at correct playing height), cabling management and flexible desktop space for laptops and other devices
- Yamaha networked lab system, with advanced communications, control and connectivity
- Attached keyboards and laptop audio connections
- Teacher station with a digital piano and an iPad based control panel for the lab system
The Creation Stations are designed for simplified power and data cabling making layout changes or re-location easy and cost-effective.

Chatswood High School
New South Wales
The Project:
Renovating what might be described as a “free range music room” in a very popular high school music program. Streamlining accessibility and flexibility with a variety of instruments and technology.
Key objectives
- Optimise room layout and reduce cabling clutter
- Accommodate a variety of keyboards, pad controllers and other technology ready for use
- Ensure flexible spaces for spontaneous activities for individuals and small groups
Having multiple concurrent activities in the room was a given, including practising, rehearsing, composing and recording.
For students, the facilities should be readily available and encourage experimentation and informal learning.
Design summary:
When you have a legendary teacher like Briona Gill and her very successful music program the design approach is simple… don’t change anything, just make it easier to do more of the same. In this case the Music EDnet Creation Stations, our custom designed music furniture range, would be the key ingredient.
Key features include:
- Installing CS61P Creation Station desks around the perimeter of the room, each with on-board power and a keyboard tray at the correct playing height.
- Ample desktop space for pad controllers, audio interfaces and other devices.
- Cable management for the keyboards and other devices on each station, minimising setup time and potential damage
Students now have more time to engage with music and an impressive range of instruments and technology.

Golden Grove Primary School
South Australia

The Project:
A new building as part of a $6.4m upgrade including dual specialist learning areas (SLAs) for music/performing arts, an adjoining resource centre and a covered outdoor learning area.
Key objectives:
- A performance level sound system for the dual SLAs suitable for music and drama with the ability to control each space separately
- Sound distribution to include connected withdrawal and teacher prep rooms
- Outdoor speaker system for adjacent areas
- Large interactive display screens for the SLAs and the resource centre
A further objective was ease of use with simple controls with the option for full live sound mixing when desired.
Design summary:
Supporting an outstanding music/performing arts program was a priority for the school, hence a flexible high performance sound system was the main design focus.
Key features include:
- A small networked mobile rack with a digital mixer, wireless mics and Bluetooth receiver
- Networked high performance powered speakers in the classrooms
- An 8-channel networked power amp driving all other speakers, including outdoors
- Touch control wall panel enabling simple or full mixing control
- Two 75 inch interactive displays on trolleys for the classrooms (plus two wall mounted in the resource centre)
The sound system utilised the school network for all audio and control allowing future flexibility and easy management.
