Gig Based Learning is how Music EDnet empowers schools to make music education real, relevant, and deeply engaging, built around how musicians actually work and learn.
Developed by respected Australian educators Dr. Brad Fuller and Peter Orenstein, Gig Based Learning (GBL) began as a classroom approach that places students at the center of their learning: composing, performing, producing, and collaborating just like working musicians do. It quickly gained traction across schools as a powerful, student-driven model that connects music education to the real world.
In 2025, GBL became a core part of Music EDnet, with Brad and Pete joining the team and their proven model becoming fully integrated into our national membership. Today, the GBL Community of Practice, along with its professional learning courses and extensive library of teaching resources, is available exclusively through your school’s Music EDnet membership.
Whether you’re a new teacher or leading a well-established program, Gig Based Learning helps you create a dynamic, student-led classroom grounded in authentic music-making. With Music EDnet behind it, you’re supported not just with pedagogy but with decades of trusted experience in delivering the right software, equipment, and professional development to help schools confidently integrate music technology and transform teaching practice. It’s a complete, practical solution built for music teachers, by music educators.
Teachers at Music EDnet Member Schools can enjoy all the benefits and support of the GBL CoP
